Gynecologic Ultrasounds

Chicago Women’s Health Group works with Souma Diagnostics, Ltd to provide ultrasound services on site for your convenience.

Gynecologic Ultrasounds are used to examine the female pelvic organs (specifically the uterus, the uterine lining or endometrium, the ovaries, and the fallopian tubes).  Your provider will determine whether it is appropriate for an ultrasound to be ordered.

This ultrasound can show:

  • Fibroid tumors
  • Pelvic mass location, size and shape
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Problems that could cause pain or bleeding such as polyps
  • The position of an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Ovulation status (treating infertility)

Another type of gynecologic ultrasound is a sonohysterogram (Saline Infusion Sonography or SIS).  This type of ultrasound utilizes saline infused into the uterus during a transvaginal ultrasound to detect the presence of intrauterine lesions such as polpys.  Click here for more information on Sonohysterograms

Many times gynecologic ultrasounds and sonohysterograms need to be done at a particular point in your menstrual cycle.  It is important that you work closely with your provider so that your ultrasound appointment is scheduled at the appropriate time.  It is also important that you schedule an appointment after the ultrasound to review the results with a provider.
