Infertility

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of timed, unprotected, intercourse.  Approximately 10% of couples in the United States have issues with fertility.  Conception is a very complicated process.  Fertility issues can be caused by a variety of factors including hormonal issues, ovarian issues, uterine or tubal problems, and semen abnormalities.

If you are experiencing problems with infertility the first step is to schedule an appointment.   A detailed medical history will be taken and we will start a work-up to identify the cause of infertility.

Treatment of infertility depends on the cause.  Medication for ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (artificial insemination), uterine surgery for polyps/fibroids or a combination of these therapies may be used.  Sometimes, more advanced therapies such as assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are necessary.  ART are ways to process eggs and sperm to help with conception.  We work closely with Reproductive Endocrinologists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Fertility Center of Illinois (FCI).  Sometimes after the initial work-up is done at our office you will be referred to one of these specialists if your provider feels that this would be the best course of action for you and your partner.
