Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections can be spread through heterosexual and homosexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Chicago Women’s Health Group offers screening and diagnosis and treatment for many STIs.

Sexually transmitted infections are spread through contact with the genitals, skin, mouth, rectum, or bodily fluids.

There are many different sexually transmitted infections. These include:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Trichomonas
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
    • Low-risk HPV is associated with genital warts or condyloma
    • High-risk HPV is associated with cervical cancer if unmonitored or untreated
  • Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
    • HSV Type I is more commonly associated with cold sores (herpes labialis)
    • HSV Type II is more commonly associated with genital herpes
    • Both HSV I and HSV II can be found in either location
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C
  • Syphilis
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections:

  • People are often asymptomatic and may not know that they have an STI. That is why it is important for you and a new partner to get screened before engaging in sexual activity.
  • Symptoms of sexually transmitted infections can include discharge from the vagina or penis, itching in the genital area, pain with urination or during sex, bleeding with intercourse, abdominal pain, and growths, sores or blisters on the genitals.

Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections:

  • The only sure way to prevent STIs is to abstain from sex or be in a mutually exclusive monogamous relationship.
  • Condoms can help reduce the risk of transmission but cannot completely prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
