Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to travel?

We generally recommend limiting travel in the last 8–10 weeks of your pregnancy. This is due to the risk of early labor and other potential problems that could arise while on a plane or in a different city. Air travel is safe during pregnancy, but we ask that you get out of your seat every few hours to stretch your legs to decrease any risk of blood clots. The same holds true for long car trips. Please call with any specific questions regarding travel or if you are traveling out of the country.

Is it safe to have intercourse?

Sex during pregnancy is safe for you and the baby. The baby is protected by the amniotic fluid and by your abdomen. Some women with high-risk pregnancies are advised to avoid intercourse during pregnancy. We will tell you if this is a concern for your pregnancy.

Who will deliver my baby?

There are eight physicians in our group who rotate call. During the daytime hours, if your doctor is available, they will be present for your delivery. At night and on the weekend, all the doctors rotate. If your primary doctor is not available, the on-call physician will be the one to take care of you.

What happens if my pregnancy is considered a high-risk pregnancy?

All of the providers at Chicago Women’s Health Group have many years of experience taking care of both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. We work closely with the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Department, neonatologists, and pediatricians at Northwestern Memorial Hospital to make sure our patients and their babies get the highest level of care. Our office is located within walking distance of Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital, home of a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Both our office and Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital are close to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, which allows for easy transfer of care if necessary.

What if I have additional questions or need to reach my doctor?

You can reach a doctor for medical advice during office hours. Please be specific with your question or concern at the time of your phone call to better facilitate a timely response to your questions. Non-urgent issues will typically be dealt with by one of the Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants in our office within that same day. If you feel that you have an urgent/emergent issue, please make this known to our office staff so we can assist you in an urgent fashion.

After hours or on weekends, our answering service will help connect you with the covering doctor. Please use our standard office number (312) 943-0282 and follow the prompts.
